ABOUT

A quiet practice, built slowly across paint, material, and light.

Bearded Man Portrait

PAUL HULEWICZ

I come here from another world.

I was not trained as an artist. Perhaps that is why I never learned where I was supposed to stop.

I started with photography. Then I began to interfere with it. Cut it. Transfer it. Paint over it. Combine it with other images and materials.
Eventually, the photograph stopped being the point.

What interests me now is what happens when an image loses its certainty.
I like the moment when something familiar becomes strange. When order begins to fall apart. When a mistake becomes part of the work.
I don't always know what I am looking for.
That is precisely what keeps me looking.

I am interested in the space between control and accident, between beauty and disruption, between what an image shows and what it refuses to explain.
I don't want to make work that gives everything away.
I want to leave something unresolved.
Something that keeps looking back at you.

The rest of the looking is in the work itself.
